What is Plyometrics?

Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system. The purpose of our plyometrics class is to improve your overall performance both in and out of the academy.

The objective of plyometrics is to generate the greatest amount of force in the shortest amount of time by training exercises deigned to produce fast powerful movements. It will train your nervous system and metabolic pathways to increase explosiveness, giving you an extra push to move even faster and with more power.

How does Plyometrics work?

When training in plyometrics you need to accelerate though a complete range of motion, followed by a relaxation into a full stretch. In other words, plyometric movements require you to load your muscle then contracted in rapid sequence. You quickly stretch the muscle you are working during the initial push-off. This is thought to increase muscle contraction, thus increasing power generation.

For movement to occur a muscle must shorten which is known as concentric contraction. However, there is a maximum amount of force or limit to which the muscle can concentrically contract. Now if the muscle can be lengthened while being loaded (i.e. eccentric phase) just prior to the muscle contraction, it will produce a greater force though the storage of elastic energy. That is, the time between the two phases, (concentric contraction and eccentric phases) must be very short.

Plyometric exercises develop explosive power due to this quick release of energy by the muscles. However, plyometrics should not be done more than a few times a week and you must keep the repetitions low. Otherwise injury could result. Furthermore, proper nutrition and a lot of rest are needed to repair and rebuild the muscles of the body due to plyometric exercises.

How can I best use this fitness program?

The Ploymetric Program can be best used with a sensible diet, plenty of rest and as a compliment to an existing exercise program. The plyometric program should not be used as the main source of exercise as the nature of the class may be very intense. Care should always be taken to assure that you are feeling your best at all times during class.

What type of shape do I have to be in to join the class?

Always consult your physician before starting this or any exercise program. You should not have any bodily injuries in which impact type exercises may aggravate, worsen or cause pain. You should be in average to good cardiovascular shape in order to participate in this exercise class. This class is not for everyone.

How old do I have to be to start the class?

You must be at least 16 years old to participate in this class and must have written permission from you parents or legal guardian.

If I have a previous injury should I join the class or continue with the Plyometric class?

If you have any injuries, you are not allowed to participate in the Plyometric class due to its nature (high impact).

What kind of workout can I expect from joining the Plyometric Program?

You can expect a challenging workout which consists of pushups, jumping, lunging and other high impact exercises. The classes use plyometric “boxes” for the participant to jump on and off of. Some exercises don’t require to use these “boxes”. The “boxes” are 6" and 12" in height.

What is the cost for the class?

The cost of the class is FREE as long as you are enrolled in the Adult Wing Chun Kung Fu class.

Safety Considerations

Due to the high impact and intense nature of the Plyometric Program it is imperative that you follow directions very carefully. Training of this type may bring about injury to people who are not ready for this type of training. Therefore the following rules must be adhered to:

  • This class is only available for students that are 18 years of age or older (16 & 17 year olds must submit in writing permission from their parents or legal guardians in order to join the class).
  • Due to the high impact, intense nature and heavy impact with the floor the student must use mats as part of their training. This will help to cushion the joints.
  • Never train without the use of mats to land on as serious injury could result.
  • Bodyweight - athletes who are over 240 pounds (109 kg) should be very careful and low-intensity plyometric exercises should be selected.
  • Technique - most importantly, a participant must be instructed on proper technique before commencing any plyometric exercise. They should be well rested and free of bodily injury.
